Allergy-Friendly Gardening: Top Tips for an Itch-Free Spring

Allergy-Friendly Gardening: Top Tips for an Itch-Free Spring

Allergy-Friendly Gardening: Top Tips for an Itch-Free Spring

As the days get longer and the sun starts shining, many of us can’t wait to get back into the garden and enjoy the fresh air. But for those with eczema, allergies, or sensitive skin, springtime gardening can bring some challenges—pollen, mould spores, and other allergens can trigger flare-ups and irritation.

With a few simple precautions, you can reduce allergens, protect your skin, and enjoy the outdoors comfortably. Here are our top tips for an allergy-friendly gardening routine:

Gear Up & Protect Your Skin

Gardening gloves are a must—but did you know you can wear eczema-friendly gloves underneath for extra protection? Our Organic Cotton Eczema Gloves create a soft, breathable barrier, reducing irritation from soil, plants, and rough gardening tools. For protection against thorns, scratches and an extra layer under clothes you could also try our 100% Cotton Arm Sleeves.

Time It Right

Pollen levels are highest in the morning and evening, so try gardening midday or after rainfall when the air is clearer. Check the pollen forecast before heading outside.

Choose Low-Allergen Plants

If pollen triggers your allergies, opt for low-pollen plants like ferns, hibiscus, and roses. Avoid highly allergenic varieties like birch trees, daisies, and sunflowers.

Rinse Away Pollen & Irritants

Pollen sticks to clothes, hair, and skin—so after gardening, change your clothes and take a quick shower to rinse away any lingering allergens. Wash your hands frequently to prevent transferring pollen to your face and eyes.

Tidy Up & Keep It Clear

Wet leaves, compost, and soil can harbour mould spores, which are another common allergy trigger. Regularly clear up fallen leaves, turn compost carefully, and wear a mask if you're handling damp soil.

Stay Sun-Safe & Hydrated

Sensitive skin can react to heat and UV exposure, so wear a wide-brimmed hat, light layers, and SPF to protect against sun irritation. Keep a hydrating balm on hand for any dry or itchy spots.

Reduce Indoor Allergens Too

After a day outside, allergens can hitch a ride indoors. Shake off clothes outside, wash bedding frequently, and vacuum with a HEPA filter to keep pollen and dust mites at bay.

With these simple adjustments, you can enjoy the beauty of spring without the discomfort of allergies and irritation. Happy gardening!
