Could Household Allergens Be Affecting Your Skin?

Published for World Allergy Week

If you live with eczema, psoriasis, or sensitive skin, you're probably no stranger to scanning ingredient lists, patch-testing new creams, and trying to figure out what caused your latest flare-up. Treatments and topical products rightly get a lot of attention but one area that's easy to overlook is the environment inside your own home.

This World Allergy Week, we are thinking about the role that everyday household allergens may play in skin irritation. Eczema is complex, and triggers are different for everyone but for some people, what's floating in the air or lurking in their bedding could be quietly contributing to the problem.

Common Household Allergens Worth Knowing About

Dust mites are one of the most widespread triggers linked to eczema and allergies. These microscopic creatures thrive in warm, humid conditions — particularly in mattresses, pillows, and soft furnishings. It's not the mites themselves but their waste particles that can provoke reactions in sensitive adults and children alike.

Pet dander is another common culprit. Even if you don't notice an obvious allergic reaction to your pet, tiny flakes of skin and dried saliva can settle into fabrics and soft surfaces throughout the home.

Mould tends to build up in damp areas like bathrooms, window frames, and poorly ventilated rooms. Mould spores can travel through the air and may irritate already-sensitive skin.

Outdoor pollen doesn't stay outside. It drifts in through open windows and doors, settling on surfaces and clothing. During high-pollen seasons, this can be hard to avoid entirely.

Fragrances in household products are often overlooked, but heavily scented laundry detergents, fabric softeners, and cleaning sprays can leave residue on clothing and bedding that sits directly against the skin.

Small Steps That Can Help

You don't need to overhaul your entire home to make a difference. A few practical changes can go a long way:

  • Wash bedding regularly — a weekly wash at a temperature appropriate for your bedding type can help reduce dust mite levels

  • Keep bedrooms well ventilated — good airflow reduces humidity and discourages dust mites and mould

  • Reduce soft furnishing clutter — fewer places for dust to settle means fewer potential triggers

  • Choose fragrance-free laundry products — if you suspect your detergent is aggravating your skin, switching to a fragrance-free alternative is a simple first step worth trying

  • Monitor windows during high-pollen days — keeping them closed when pollen counts are high can limit how much enters your living spaces

Many people find using air purifiers throughout their home helps keep indoor air cleaner, reducing allergens within the home.

Clothing Matters Too

It's not just what's in the air, but what touches your skin all day matters just as much. Synthetic fabrics and rough textures can cause friction and trap heat, which doesn't help when skin is already irritated. Opting for soft, breathable natural fibres like organic cotton can make a real difference to comfort levels, particularly for children and adults who experience regular flare-ups.

The fabric closest to your skin is worth thinking about just as carefully as the products you apply to it.

Finding What Works for You

Managing eczema and sensitive skin is often a process of understanding your own individual triggers — some of which might be environmental — and making thoughtful, gradual changes that support your skin over time. What affects one person may not affect another, so approaching it with curiosity rather than frustration tends to help.

Small adjustments at home, combined with advice from your GP or dermatologist, can add up to a real improvement in day-to-day comfort.
